ASCRL has endorsed the Copyright Labeling and Ethical AI Reporting Act, or CLEAR Act, introduced by Senators Adam Schiff (D-CA), and John Curtis (R-UT). The CLEAR Act would require AI companies to disclose their use of copyrighted works to train generative AI to the Copyright Office. These provisions will assist creators and rightsholders in protecting their intellectual property rights, and would promote transparency in the development of generative AI.

In our letter of endorsement, we wrote “The American Society for Collective Rights Licensing (ASCRL), the largest not-for-profit photography and illustrator association in the United States, enthusiastically supports the Copyright Labeling and Ethical AI Reporting (CLEAR) Act. This bill will help visual material authors identify possible uses and exploitation of their works for the purposes of generative AI machine learning which is an important step forward in the identification of the rights that copyright owners seek to protect when their works are used for artificial intelligence.”

In addition to ASCRL, the bill has been endorsed by over 25 creators’ organizations representing a broad spectrum of creative industries, including writers, musicians, composers, lyricists, recording artists, and actors and performers.
